It’s a New Year!
Are you looking for a New Year’s resolution? Or maybe listening to more podcasts is already one you have set this year. Podcasts are becoming more and more popular by the hour because of their convenience!
Now I LOVE podcasts, and since the pandemic, I have been tuning in much more! Whether it be sitting down with a coffee or listening to a podcast when cleaning the house - I never get bored! Podcasts are also an easy and fun way to absorb information while doing something else.
However, if you are late to the podcast party, I have you covered with some epic ocean-themed podcasts for you to listen to!
1. This Ocean Life
Lose yourself in The Ocean Life Podcast, hosted by Josh Pederson. He tells real-life ocean stories of people who have based their lives around the mysterious ocean.
The people featured in his podcast range from spearfishers to ocean scientists, and everyone that fits in between.
2. Marine Conservation Happy Hour
This one is a rather unique podcast!
The Marine Conservation Happy Hour co-hosted by Dr Craken MacCraic and Dr Scarlett Smash is set in a pubs happy hour.
So grab a drink and get ready to listen to some fun science! They cover a broad range of topics in their episodes, including an episode on the Seal Hospital in Cornwall that the BDMLR has also been involved in building.
3. Speak Up For The Ocean Blue
Speak Up For The Ocean Blue releases new podcast episodes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The podcast aims to raise awareness on different ocean science and conservation projects around the world.
Their guests inspire people near and far, educating listeners like you to live a more ocean-friendly life.
It covers hot topics in the media such as climate change, to more technical topics in ocean science - so there is something for everyone to listen to!
4. Beyond Jaws
Beyond Jaws is no Steven Spielberg movie… It is the official podcast of the American Elasmobranch Society (AES), one of the largest and oldest professional organisations dedicated to sharks!
This podcast is dedicated to the scientific study, conservation, and education of sharks, rays, and skates, presented in a fun and informative way to engage and inform both shark enthusiasts and the general public.
5. Water Women
The Water Women Podcast is a great listen if you are cleaning the house or sitting having your morning tea or coffee.
This podcast is all about incredible women, passionate about the ocean coming together to document interesting topics. These topics include underwater photography and plastic pollution solutions.
6. How To Save A Planet
Get ready as Dr Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, journalist Alex Blumbur and a team of "climate nerds", have dropped their new podcast How To Save A Planet, bringing inspiring stories on the relevant topic of climate change.

7. So You Want To Be A Marine Biologist
Have you dreamt of studying and working by the ocean?
So You Want To Be A Marine Biologist is for all those dreamers that want to be a marine biologist or work in the marine field.
The podcast interviews people in the field, including the one and only Dr Sylvia Earle to share information on a wide range of marine biology and ocean topics.
8. Meet The Ocean
Meet The Ocean, is a non-profit educational podcast that places the listener right into the podcast reader's head. It feels more like a story, taking you on an ocean-tastic journey as the reader shares amazing memories and incredible marine encounters with you.
Paul North, the founder and podcast host of Meet The Ocean, aims to share his passion for the ocean, educate the younger generation, and create a space to create a discussion.
9. Wild About Conservation
Hosted by two chatty conservationists, Hannah and Lexi, Wild About Conservation is a new podcast all about, you guessed it...wildlife and conservation.
These two are lovely to listen to, but we can't forget all the amazing women in ocean science, conservationists, volunteers, and many more people that Hannah and Lexi talk to as guests on their podcast!
10. REEF Roundup
REEF Roundup is a podcast run by Tamara and Graham who met in Asia when they were working on their Divemaster Course and participating in a marine science internship.
Over their love of marine life, they quickly bonded and shared an interest in building something epic, which they did!
Tamara and Graham founded the “non-profit REEF Scuba, whose mission is to integrate restoration, ecology, and environmental focused education into all levels of scuba instruction” - as a scuba diver instructor, I absolutely love this idea!
Their podcast is part of the REEF Scuba project, where they interview people all around the world that are doing inspiring ocean-related work.
11. Aquadocs
If you have a love for animal health like myself, then you are going to fall in love with this one!
Every Tuesday Aquadocs drops a new podcast for every ocean lover to sit back, listen, and enjoy. The podcast invites veterinarians and other animal health experts to share their stories, experiences, and knowledge in aquatic and animal health.
You do not have to be a veterinary student to tune into this podcast. Michelle Greenfield (founder) is on a mission to make aquatic veterinary information more accessible to all types of listeners, no matter their age, background, or experience level.
So, if you are interested and want to learn more about aquaculture, marine mammals, and marine veterinary, this is the podcast for you!
