Belize is a small country located in the Caribbean, directly under Mexico. It is well known for having the second largest Barrier Reef in the world. There is also the famous Great Blue Hole that you can visit, as well.
Come along with me as I explain more about the top 4 activities that you can do in Belize, which all involve bodies of water - making it great for ocean enthusiasts!
1. Snorkelling and Diving in the Caribbean Sea
There are two main spots that are famous for snorkelling and diving in Belize. You absolutely must explore them at some point in your life.
Snorkelling/Diving Alongside the Belize Barrier Reef
Many people book trips to the Barrier reef every year to behold the beauty that it offers. In 1836, Charles Darwin also visited this remarkable site and named it the most remarkable coral reef in the Caribbean.
There are hundreds of different species of fishes living near the Belize barrier reef, including hammerhead sharks, reef sharks, nurse sharks, and bull sharks.
You will be able to view many different corals and likely to see different turtles, stingrays, jellyfish and so much more! The Belize Barrier reef is still healthy providing a rich home to countless marine animals.
Snorkelling/Diving the Great Blue Hole
One of Belize’s greatest treasures is the Great Blue Hole, which is a cenote that measures 984ft wide and 354ft deep. If you are a diver, this would be a dream destination that you can easily add to your bucket list, if it isn’t already on there.
The legendary marine biologist, Jacques Cousteau had the privilege of visiting the Blue Hole in 1971. After which, he named it one of his top 10 favourite diving spots in the world!
2. The Ever-Famous Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave)
People from all over the world have visited Belize just to see the popular ATM Cave site. This adventure consists of hiking a 45-minute trail, which involves crossing a river three times.
You also must swim into the entrance of the cave and climb a rock boulder and a ladder. All of this is to see the main attraction, which is a fully intact human body skeleton that was left behind by the ancient Mayans as a sacrifice.
If you love adventure, while learning some history and getting wet, then this is the perfect experience for you to try, when in Belize.

3. The Barton Creek Cave Canoeing Tour
It is also a half-day activity, so it allows you to be back in San Ignacio Town early enough to plan other in-town activities or to simply enjoy the rest of the day at your hotel or nearby restaurants.
Many people sometimes add zip-lining to this experience to lengthen and add a little more adventure to their day.
4. Cave Tubing at Nohoch Che’en Cave
Cave Tubing has always been a well-liked activity for both locals and tourists in Belize.
This is also a relaxing experience that you can enjoy as you sit in your tubes and float in the river, passing through cave systems. Your guide will provide you with a history of the site while ensuring that you remain safe and thoroughly enjoy your tour.
Prepare to get wet, and make sure you pack an extra change of clothes, but most importantly, have fun!
Some General Tips When Visiting Belize
Pack eco-friendly sunscreen and eco-friendly insect repellant. Using eco-friendly substances not only helps to save the environment but is not harsh on your skin like the creams and sprays that have chemicals in them.
Pack a nice pair of hiking or water shoes, that has a good grip on the bottom. Once you are planning on going on a tour/activity that involves hiking and water, you will want to ensure that you have a good pair of shoes to wear so that you lessen the chances of slipping and falling when going on your tour.
Do not be afraid to try the street food and local food. A good tip is to visit the stall that has the most people around it because this more than likely means that they have the nicest food.
